In an effort to reach the masses in the country of over 1.3 billion people, Netflix is now focusing on roping in crowd pleasers or big names in Bollywood for its future projects. By the end of next year, Netflix will have names like Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, Emraan Hasmi, and Jacqueline Fernandez associated with it. The American company has already dropped the trailer of the Emraan Hashmi starrer Bard of Blood (slated to release on September 27), which is produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment. Additionally, it has 12 other big and interesting projects on its slate for Indian audience to look forward to in 2019 and 2020. Let’s have a look at these upcoming Netflix India Movies and Shows.
1. Class of 83
Synopsis: Class of 83 is the story of an honest policeman-turned-trainer and his students who struggle with complexities of morals, honour and devotion towards their country.
With Class of 83, Shah Rukh Khan’s production house marks its second collaboration with Netflix after Bard of Blood. The makers of the film have clarified that the film should not be confused with the Ranveer Singh starrer 83, which is based on the Indian cricket team’s victory in 1983. This film, like Bard of Blood, is a novel adaptation of the same name, written by S. Hussain Zaidi. Bobby Deol will be making his digital debut by playing the lead, while Anup Soni, Joy Sengupta, and Vishwajeet Pradhan will be seen in important roles. Atul Sabharwal (Aurangzeb, My Wife’s Murder) will be directing the film and for DoP, the Norwegian cinematographer Mario Poljac has been brought on board.
Synopsis: In this fictional series, a two-century old British Army officer and his zombie soldiers will battle against the modern-day Indian police in a remote village.
The series is being helmed by the showrunner, Patrick Graham, who earlier wrote and directed Ghoul, a horror web series based on Arab folklore. Nikhil Mahajan, who is known for directing Pune 52, will be co-directing the series. Screenwriter Suhani Kanwar, who is credited for additional screenplay for feminist dramedy Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017) and the screenplay for the Netflix original Leila, has been roped in to write the series. Betaal‘s release date is yet to be confirmed by the makers.
Synopsis: A middle-aged, dutiful wife Sheel from Uttar Pradesh finds herself swept into the world of violence and politics when she accidentally kills a mafia leader.
Anushka Sharma and her brother Karnesh Sharma will be producing Mai under their Clean Slate Films banner. Atul Mongia will be sharing the writing responsibility with Tamal Sen and Amita Vyas. Sudip Sharma, who wrote dialogues and screenplay for Udta Punjab and Sonchiriya, will be serving as the creative producer for the show.
Synopsis: Satya and Bulbul are separated when the former is sent to England. Upon returning from England, Satya finds out that Bulbul, who was also the child bride of his brother, is abandoned by him and now she serves the people of the village, which is now known for mysterious deaths and haunting by a woman living in the tree.
Produced by Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Films again, this horror period drama is set in Kolkata. It looks at the age-old beliefs and superstitions. Bulbul will reunite the one-film old co-actors Avinash Tiwary and Tripti Dimri, who will be playing the central characters, Satya and Bulbul. Other actors, such as Rahul Bose, Parambrata and Paoli Dam will also be seen in pivotal roles. Bulbul is expected to steam on Netflix by year end.
5. Baahubali: Before the Beginning
Synopsis: Sivagami, a defiant and resentful girl transforms into a wise queen as the kingdom of Mahishmati transforms from a city into a powerful empire.
In The Rise of Sivagami, novelist Anand Neelakantan explores the character of Sivagami from the Baahubali franchise. As soon the novel was released in March 2017, director of Baahubali films, S S Rajamouli confirmed that he will be making a television series based on the novel. Soon, it was announced that the series will be released on Netflix. The lead character will be payed by Mrunal Thakur, who impressed critics and audience with her performance in Tabrez Noorani’s Love Sonia and was last seen opposite Hrithik Roshan in Super 36.
6. Ghost Stories
Synopsis: An anthology of four short horror films that will mark the second collaboration of four influential filmmakers of Netflix’s earlier hit Lust Stories.
With this horror anthology, filmmakers Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Bannerjee, and Karan Johar will reunite to give us audience some spine-chilling horror stories. It is reported that these stories would be thematically interconnected. The production (by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP and Ashi Dua) has started in August while the release date for Ghost Stories is yet to be announced.
7. Mrs. Serial Killer
Synopsis: A doting wife will need to perform a murder in the same way as the killer to prove her husband innocent.
Jacqueline Fernandez is all set to make her digital debut by playing the lead character in Netflix’s thriller, Mrs. Serial Killer. The movie will be directed by Shirish Kunder (Kriti, Jaan-e-mann), while his wife and director Farah Khan will produce it.
Synopsis: Beanie, a young girl, tries to find her voice as a stand-up comic in Mumbai while she juggles between her day job, tenacious parents and a complicated love life.
Messy is helmed by the American-Indian actor, Ravi Patel who we know from Master of None (2015 – 2017) and Meet the Patels (2014). Besides sharing the writing duties with Neel Shah (The Bold Type), he will also be starring in it. The series will be produced by David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer of The District and Seher Aly Latif and Shivani Saran of Mutant Films.
Synopsis: When a college heartthrob is accused of rape, different versions of truth surface.
Produced by Dharmatic (the digital content wing of the Dharma Productions), Guilty marks the second digital collaboration between Karan Johar and actor Kiara Advani who earlier worked together on one of the short films in Lust Stories. Kiara Advani will play a musician in the film. Ruchi Narain, who wrote Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, will be directing the film.
10. Masaba Masaba
Synopsis: We explore a part of the life of fashion designer, Masaba Gupta and her actor mother, Neena Gupta, as the former struggles to fit in a conventional society.
Masaba Masaba, a reality web show, is produced by Ashvini Yardi’s Viniyard Films, who last produced Netflix’s original comedy drama, Chopsticks (2019). It will be directed by Sonam Nair, known for her short film, Khujli (2017) and a feature film The Trip (2018).
11. Bombay Begums
Synopsis: Five women across generations redefine the notions of ambitions, identity, and empowerment while they struggle with their desires, ethics, and work life in the Mumbai’s banking sector.
The series Bombay Begums is written and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and is executive produced by Cherin Entertainment and Endemol Shine India.
Synopsis: Three determined college graduates enter the flourishing wave of startup companies with a dream to change the world while growing their bank balance.
Produced by Bandra West Productions and directed by Udai Singh Pawar, (AD in Airlift, Yeh Saali Zindagi), the movie explores the friendship dynamics between its leads through money and chaos that a startup can bring in their life. Priyanshu Painyull, Rajeev Siddhartha, Shadab Kamal, and Sheetal Thakur will be seen playing the lead roles for this Netflic original.
